Two-day workshop
The workshop will focus on exploring the concept of storytelling in the field of photojournalism and addressing the challenges and opportunities brought about by the digital era. “The best story is the story at your backyard”. It also aims to address the story research and development with Africa and empower participants to find their narrative voice and tell the stories they are passionate about. Here's a breakdown of the workshop's key components and objectives:
1. Defining "the story" in photojournalism: The workshop starts by examining the notion of "the story" in the context of photojournalism. It encourages participants to reflect on what constitutes a compelling narrative and how it can be effectively conveyed through visual storytelling.
2. Exploring narrative approaches in the digital era: With the advent of digital technologies and platforms, photojournalists now have a broader range of narrative approaches at their disposal. The workshop delves into various techniques, such as multimedia storytelling, interactive presentations, and social media engagement, highlighting the new possibilities and challenges they present.
Analyzing relevant work: Through class discussions and analysis of relevant photojournalistic work, the workshop provides participants with exposure to different narrative styles, approaches, and subject matters. They can learn from the works of established photographers and gain insights into effective storytelling techniques.
Assignments and practical exercises: The workshop include assignments and practical exercises designed to help participants develop their narrative voice. These assignments could involve researching and photographing stories of personal significance, experimenting with different storytelling techniques, and receiving constructive feedback to refine their skills.
Facilitating discussions: Class discussions play a crucial role in the workshop, allowing participants to exchange ideas, share their perspectives, and learn from one another. The facilitator can guide discussions on topics like ethical considerations, the power dynamics between the storyteller and subjects, and the responsibilities of a photojournalist.
Empowering participants to define their stories: Throughout the workshop, the primary goal is to empower participants to identify the stories they are passionate about and develop their unique narrative voice. By providing guidance, support, and critical feedback, the workshop aims to foster individual expression and self-discovery among the participants.
By combining theoretical discussions, analysis of relevant work, practical assignments, and meaningful class interactions, this workshop seeks to equip aspiring photojournalists and visual storytellers with the tools and insights they need to navigate the complexities of storytelling in the digital era and contribute to a more diverse and inclusive narrative landscape.
